HPV DNA was detected in more than 96% of our samples, highlighting the adequacy of the method in detecting HPV in archival, potentially degraded samples.15, 19, 20 The prevalence of HPV in our sample of anal cancers is consistent with observations from other parts of the world.21, 22 Infection with HPV 18 was less commonly detected than HPV 52 and 54. The finding of low‐risk HPV genotypes such as 6 and 11, in the absence of any oncogenic types in 10.1% of specimens diagnosed histologically as cancers is of interest and has also been shown occasionally in other studies.6, 22 Some of the samples in which only HPV 6 or 11 were detected have been further investigated using laser capture micro dissection and have been confirmed to only contain these “low‐risk” types.23 Furthermore, a recent detailed evaluation of the HPV genotypes in these samples failed to detect any unusual genomic variants.24 Clearly the role of HPV 6 and 11 in the etiology of anal cancer warrants further investigations.13, The mean age of development of anal cancer is higher than that for cervical cancer, and thus the impact of any effect of HPV vaccines on anal cancer rates is unlikely to be seen for several decades.14 Assuming 100% efficacy, if the cancer cases in our series containing only bHPV, qHPV and nHPV vaccine genotypes are considered, then these vaccines could prevent 61%, 74% and 77% cases of anal cancers, respectively (Table 3). HPV detection and typing were carried out by Nested multiplex PCR. In HIV‐negative patients (n = 23), detection of a single HPV genotype was seen in 82.6% (n = 19) and multiple HPV genotypes were found in the remainder. High‐risk HPV genotypes 35 and 51 were detected in 1.8% (n = 2) of samples without any vaccine preventable types.

The level of education among the women was generally low, with the vast majority, 74% (74/100), having at most basic education while 6% (6/100) reported to be illiterates. Hybridized band signals corresponding to HPV types were visually interpreted according to the manufacturer's instructions. And so in that case, we talk about a genotype-phenotype correlation. Even though a higher proportion of HIV positives were found to have multiple HPV types than HIV‐negative patients, the observed difference was not statistically significant (p = 0.09). When used in that way, it's usually related to another term, called phenotype, which is the change in sequence to which the genotype refers. Two microliters of first round PCR product, 15 pmols of forward, and reverse primers for genotyping were used. Cancers without any vaccine‐preventable HPV genotypes were considered as not preventable by currently available vaccines. Globally, cervical cancer remains a primary cause of morbidity and mortality, with estimated 569,847 new cases and 311,365 attributable deaths in 2018 [1, 2]. However, a systematic review of 19 epidemiological studies of the risk of genital HPV infection and oral contraceptive use concluded that there was no evidence for a strong positive or negative association between HPV positivity and ever use or long duration use of oral contraceptives [27].
