Written by The George Family Foundation, in support of the Civil Conversations Project. This photograph, it’s a frontal portrait of a young woman, but it’s not a posed portrait. Ms. Tippett: So one of the things you write about is the loss of forgetting — one of the things we’re experiencing now…. We sometimes think of culture as something we go out there and consume. So people who were hearing about Tranströmer for the first time that morning were very grandly opining that his collected works come to maybe 250 pages, that how could he possibly get the Nobel Prize for that slender body of work? Ms. Tippett: Yes, please do. Ms. Tippett: One of the pieces of language that I find you use that I actually found really useful in appreciating the breadth of your work and the breadth of influences — you said credal religion was no longer meaningful to you, and politics — which we all engage with as a matter of course and which you engaged with when you went back to Nigeria and here in your writing — holds a lot of disenchantment, even while it’s important. Ms. Percy: And that launched Krista Tippett Public Productions. Ms. Tippett: I know. Mr. Cole: Right, but also, to be in a state of quiet sorrow and knowing that there are things we cannot solve. Krista Tippett created and leads The On Being Project and hosts the On Being radio show and podcast. [laughter] And so I do feel like, as this team gets in place, I feel like part of the space that opens up is that I am more out in the world. And I think — Casper used the word “transformation.” Again, another way to talk about the place where we’re working — what we believe in, what we’re fostering is the human transformation that makes social transformation possible. She is one of our wisest voices on social evolution and the spiritual aspect of social healing. Hosted by Krista Tippett. People are rediscovering him. He couldn’t live here. She’s in a crowd, and he has photographed her. And then you went back to Kalamazoo, which you described as “home, strange home,” for college. Mr. Cole: Exactly. I’m Krista Tippett, and this is On Being. Mr. ter Kuile: But it’s really an opportunity to do what Erinn was just saying, in terms of reflecting back to the community, the community itself in some way. Obviously, we launched This Movie Changed Me…. Ms. Tippett: This would be like mid- to late-’90s…. As we begin a new chapter, the leadership team — CEO and founder Krista Tippett, executive producer Lily Percy, COO Erinn Farrell, and the executive director of the new Impact Lab, Casper ter Kuile — sits down to update you on what’s next for The On Being Project. Ms. Farrell: Lizzo made it sound good, though. And this especially happens around clever people, smart people — “Have you read this? But it’s also really — it can be just really important, what happens in a room with 50 people, or 500 people. Hosted by Krista Tippett. Mr. Cole: Absolutely — oh, it’s a tragedy. And I think, often, of one of my favorite conversations that Krista had, which was with Jean Vanier, the founder of L’Arche. Ms. Tippett: …what we lose by being able to look everything up or have Google deliver it directly to our brains. And so, to embody that, even for three, four days, was such a special thing, and to hear what our listening community wants more of, that they want to be together more; they want to dig into these conversations themselves. We created the blog. But then, in 2013, you decided that you were going to start your own production company, start your own company, really, which was first called Krista Tippett Public Productions, [laughs] mostly because you couldn’t come up with any other names. You’ll also find special episodes in this feed, including Living the Questions — an occasional On Being segment where Krista muses on questions from our listening community. Rebecca Solnit cited this. And I think a lot of people feel alone in that aspiration, to varying degrees. She sat with Krista for a rare, intimate conversation in 2015. This week we offer a preview of the next season of our Poetry Unbound podcast, which returns on Monday, Sept. 28. I know horrible states, and I know less horrible ones. And just thinking this whole year about the question of hospitality has given me a way to read a lot of things that are very distressing, in this country and in the world, around the border but also around domestic policy. But no one else has a blog the way we do, that is just as thoughtful and additive, and also, that’s lifting up voices from people, again, that aren’t often heard in media spaces. Krista Tippett, host: Teju Cole sees overlap and interplay, “singing lines,” between Brahms and what he lovingly calls the “weird power” of daily technologies like Google. Right this minute, this does seem to be something that is real, that might not be meaning but comes awfully close to it: to be sitting together in the dark of this political and social moment, to be sitting together in the dark of what it actually means to be a human being, even if this were a euphoric political moment. So, getting this research back, I just felt like, we have a responsibility to this. It is a Christian word; it’s a word that’s meaningful for many Christians. Ms. Percy: Other content on our blog, as well, and our content in our other audio spaces. Its trajectory was cathartically changed the day he and his wife Connie woke up to find that their firstborn two-year-old son, Kaidin, had mysteriously died in his sleep. On Being with Krista Tippett September 10, 2020. angel Kyodo williams The World Is Our Field of Practice. [laughs] And it’s just — it’s pretty extraordinary, the amount of hard, hard work that has happened in that time, across our entire project. So I’ve been baptized twice in Kalamazoo. Ms. Tippett: And you mean that it’s a consequence of policies that have been around much longer than the Trump administration? Ms. Percy: And that launched Krista Tippett Public Productions. Each week a new discovery about the immensity of our lives. One of mine is that I did convert a lot of people to Christianity. I think, in American life, where we’re so action-oriented and so save-the-world, big-picture-oriented, this human piece gets neglected. Casper ter Kuile, the new executive director for On Being’s Impact Lab — is that your actual title? But ultimately, it was a name we were always having to explain away and overcome, and it wasn’t actually hospitable to the breadth of people who were actually listening. But I think those are two key things to everything that we do at The On Being Project. I talk to my dead; I don’t know if they’re anywhere. Mr. ter Kuile: Episode 3, I think; it was a real standout. Why is this enough? This is a scary idea; it’s something that a lot of people would never even try, because you were successful; you were good at what you were doing; things were working well. Ms. Tippett: You grew up — and I think this is very poetic — between Lagos and Kalamazoo. Ms. Percy: Yeah, in February. And so, moving forward with this portfolio idea of podcasts, that’s gonna be at the center of it, is: Who do we want to partner with? Ms. Percy: So you were talking about how that name change of Speaking of Faith to On Being happened because you realized that the conversation you were having was really more about questions than certainty. It’s really helping to meet people where they are. And the more that we were in relationship with Krista and the On Being team, the more we realized, we’re really connected here. And that, itself, is a consolation. How did we get here? They were taking it, they were working with it. His 2014 New Yorker essay about the novelist and social critic James Baldwin helped resurface Baldwin’s prescient voice for new realities. This poem by Ada Limón tells the story of a person living with invisible chronic pain who finds unexpected fortitude from a girl dressed as a superhero. She’s a National Humanities Medalist, and The New York Times bestselling author of Becoming Wise: An Inquiry into the Mystery and Art of Living. And then, we are thinking through what was once called Becoming Wise — may be called that, may be a different name; and thinking through what that should be — we’ve heard, for a long time, from our listeners that they’d like to have the option of shorter-form content to accompany them when they don’t have 51 minutes to listen to On Being — just really thinking through what that should look like, what should that short-form content be. But it’s an Obama-era photo. And then, here we are in 2018, in a fractured world, in a hurting world — and yet, we’re in this moment of passage, and we’re in this moment of generational change. It’s not even a Jewish word. So it’s probably where we should finish. Ms. Tippett: I’m pretty sure you said “vital” with a “t”. It was also because people on the left were attacking him. It’s been really incredible to see how you guys have continued to evolve that space. The worst implies not living to tell the tale. Ms. Percy: It’s fascinating, to me, that this has also evolved to meet the current need. Optimism is “Oh, well, it’s all gonna be fine.”. I certainly don’t believe that God has a wonderful plan to make it all OK. The On Being Project is located on Dakota land. And somewhere he writes that if a community is only for itself, it will die — which I thought was so striking, because I think that’s one of the things that I’m most passionate about, as we think about building community and building relationships, is that it isn’t just for itself; it’s for a world transformed in some way.
